Life

Forey attended the military school in Saint-Cyr , joined the 2nd light regiment as a lieutenant in 1824 , took part in the expedition to Algiers in 1830 and served there, most recently as a major (1835–1844). He was then appointed colonel of a regiment in France, after the February Revolution of 1848 he was entrusted by the Republic with the command of a brigade to protect the National Assembly and, as an avid Bonapartist, promoted to division general and member of the infantry committee in 1852 .

In the Crimean War he commanded the 4th Division in the Battle of the Alma . In the Sardinian War he fought as the commander of a division on May 20, 1859 near Montebello and stormed the last base of the Austrian center, the village of Favriano, in the battle of Solferino , for which he was appointed senator after the war was over.

In the summer of 1862 he received the supreme command of the expedition to Mexico and landed in Veracruz on September 17, 1862 . He penetrated the interior of the country with great difficulty and arrived in March 1863 in front of the fortress of Puebla, which, courageously defended by General Ortega, did not surrender until May 17th. On June 10th, Forey entered Mexico at the head of 15,000 men .

After Forey had set up a triumvirate made up of locals as an interim government until the arrival of the new Emperor Maximilian and handed over the supreme command to General Bazaine , he returned to France, appointed Marshal (July 2), and took command of the 2nd Army Corps.

Having had a brain condition for a long time, he died on June 20, 1872 in Paris.
