Émile Amélineau

Émile Amélineau (born August 28, 1850 in La Chaize-Giraud , † January 12, 1915 in Châteaudun ) was a French Egyptologist and Coptologist . He was best known for his excavation work in the Egyptian royal cemetery of Abydos and for his publications on the Coptic language .

Amélineau originally studied theology and was ordained priest for the Archdiocese of Rennes in 1878 . In Paris he attended courses in Egyptology and Coptic Studies with Gaston Maspero and Eugène Grébaut from 1878 to 1883 . From 1883 to 1885 he was a member of the Mission archéologique française in Cairo . In 1887 he resigned his priesthood and received his doctorate with the work Essai sur le gnosticisme égyptien, ses développements et son origine égyptienne . From 1887 to 1903 he was maître de conférences at the École pratique des hautes études in the department of religious studies. From 1894 to 1895 he carried out excavations in Abydos every year. His excavations brought out finds such as the grave stele of the king ( Pharaoh ) Wadji ( 1st dynasty ). His collection was sold to the Louvre at several auctions in the Hôtel Drouot in Paris in 1904 . From 1903 to 1915 he was deputy director and head of the chair for Egyptian religion at the École pratique des hautes études.
