The Ecumenical Church Congress ( ÖKT ) is an ecumenical lay meeting of Christians , especially of the two major denominations, in Germany.

It is organized jointly by the German Evangelical Church Congress and the Central Committee of German Catholics . In order to underline the ecumenical character, a regular Catholic Day and Protestant Church Day, separated by religion, are canceled .

history

The first Whitsun Ecumenical Meeting with 8,270 permanent participants took place from June 3rd to 5th, 1971 at the invitation of the Presidium of the German Evangelical Church Congress and the Central Committee of German Catholics in Augsburg .

The first Ecumenical Church Congress took place in Berlin in 2003 . The slogan of the Ecumenical Kirchentag 2003 was “You should be a blessing”. Over 200,000 regular visitors came.

The second Ecumenical Church was contrary to the original plan in 2010 from 12th to 16th of May in Munich instead. Here, too, the governing bodies were jointly occupied by the German Evangelical Church Congress and the Central Committee of German Catholics. The motto was "So that you have hope". This ÖKT had over 3039 events at 577 venues and 125,000 regular visitors. Of these, around 58% were Protestant, 58% female, 28% schoolchildren, 38% under 30 years old and 17% over 60 years old.

On Pentecost 2015, an ecumenical church convention was organized in Speyer by the diocese and the regional church. 130 organizations presented themselves on the church mile . 20,000 visitors were expected. At this ÖKT, an ecumenical guideline that is unique in Germany was adopted.

The third Ecumenical Church Congress is to take place from May 13th to May 16th, 2021 in Frankfurt am Main . The original plan was to hold the next Ecumenical Church Congress in 2019. For this year, however, there was no invitation from a Catholic diocese or a Protestant regional church. A major ecumenical event was celebrated as early as 2017 on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation .
