History and endowment

The Austrian Art Prize, an appreciation prize up to 2009 , is awarded to established artists “for their extensive, internationally recognized oeuvre”. In 2013, an additional prize category was set up for established initiatives by cultural workers. The winners of the Austrian Art Prize are selected by independent expert juries and, in this area, in the form of an advisory board ; an application is not possible.

The prize was initially endowed with 12,000  euros in prize money. In 2017 the prize money was 15,000 euros.
