Ünsal Mukadder Arik (born October 27, 1980 in Parsberg ) is a German-Turkish professional boxer .

Life

In his youth, Arik played soccer in the Bayern team, in the B-youth at SSV Jahn Regensburg and in the A-youth of the Turkish top club Fenerbahçe Istanbul . After a broken tibia and fibula, Arik played in the regional league for Kareth Lappersdorf, SV Fortuna Regensburg and SE Freising. Then he ended his football career.

Arik began his boxing career as an amateur at the boxing club "Boxfit" in Regensburg at the age of 27 . There he played eleven fights, of which eight were wins, two losses and one draw.

In boxing, he won the East Bavarian Middleweight Championship as an amateur. At the age of 30 he played his first professional match on May 20, 2011 in Munich against Georgios Pegios. He lost after eight seconds to technical knockout. He then won 18 fights in a row. In October 2011 he won the international German championship against Thomas Hengstberger and in December 2011 the international WBF championship against Turgay Uzun . Both victories were achieved by technical knockout within three rounds.

In May 2012 he defeated Benson Mwakyembe prematurely in the second round and thus became IBF European Champion, but did not defend the title. In November 2012 he secured the IBF International title with an early win against Vasile Dragomir and in March 2013 the IBF Intercontinental title also early against Francis Cheka. In June 2013 he then surprisingly lost on points against the Bosnian Slavisa Simeunovic.

Against Adnan Zilić, Arik won the interim WBU title on May 9, 2015 in Hildesheim and was allowed to enter the Golden Book of the city of Parsberg on June 23, 2015.

In December 2015, Arik was able to secure the IBF European Championship again when he beat Zoltán Sera just on points. During the fight both boxers were on the ground. In July 2016 he defeated Miloš Janjanin in the fight for the GBU title by knockout in the third round.

On May 12, 2018, Arik won his tenth UBF title against the Georgian Nikoloz Berkatsashvili and defended it on October 6, 2018 in Braunschweig.

On November 8, 2019, Ünsal Arik fought for the WBC Asia Champion title in Bergisch Gladbach . His opponent was the Belarusian former EBU European champion Siarhei Huliakevich. Arik won on points in eight rounds.

Due to the corona pandemic, Ünsal Arik, like every athlete, had a long break. After several postponements of the fight, he boxed on July 18, 2020 in Wiesbaden. Originally, he wanted to defend the WBC Asia title again against Siarhei Huliakevich. Because Huliakevich could not fly in because of the Corona rules, Arik received the German boxer Dustin Amann as an opponent, but could not defend the WBC Asia title. The defense was postponed; Instead, the boxing was for the BDB International Championship. With victory in the third round after a technical knockout, Ünsal Arik secured the international German championship.

Political and social engagement

After a fight in Tekirdağ in 2013, Arik protested against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ( Turkish Bu Ülke Ataturkün, Tayyipin değil , 'The land belongs to Ataturk , not Tayyip' ) with a T-shirt label . After his World Cup fight in Hamburg, Arik also aroused the interest of the German media. On August 2, 2016, he criticized Erdoğan and his supporters on Sat.1 - Breakfast TV . In Neo Magazin Royale on March 16, 2017, Arik again took a stand against Erdoğan and his politics, in particular the constitutional referendum in Turkey in 2017 . In 2018, he voted for Erdoğan's rival Muharrem Ince in the presidential election . Ünsal Arik is the first Turkish boxer who was allowed to deposit his IBF EM belt at the Anıtkabir mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk with a state ceremony. Arik works against fascist Turks.
