Đà Lạt is a city in Vietnam , located in the southern part of the central mountain region on the Xuân Hương reservoir . The city has 188,467 inhabitants (as of 2004). Đà Lạt is the capital of the Lâm Đồng Province and has a university and several research institutes. Vegetable growing, floriculture and tourism are the economic sectors in Đà Lạt.
The literal meaning of the name in the local Lat language is " River of the Lat People ". The city is surrounded by lakes, waterfalls and forests. Due to the comparatively mild climate, the park-like environment and the evergreen forests, it is a popular holiday destination for foreign and local tourists. Đà Lạt is also known as “ Little Paris ”, “ Disneyland ”, “ City of Eternal Spring ” or “ City of Artists ”.
history
The first European to travel to the city in 1893 was the doctor Alexandre Yersin , who worked for the doctor Louis Pasteur . However, Đà Lạt was not officially founded by the French colonial rulers until 1912 . They loved the city and its surroundings because of the mild climate. Especially the upper class of Saigon built their weekend villas and retirement homes here, which still make up the charm of Đà LĐts.
During the Vietnam War , Đà Lạt was the location of the only nuclear reactor in South Vietnam and a military academy. Economically, the city supplied agricultural products to the capital Saigon both for export. Đà Lạt was largely spared the destruction of the war. Today Đà Lạt is developing very quickly as part of the general economic boom in Vietnam. The old Đà Lạt Palace Hotel has been taken over by the Sofitel Group and one of the most scenic golf courses in Vietnam has been laid out around the hotel.
