İsmail Kurt (born January 1, 1934 in Karakoç , Kırklareli Province , † February 27, 2017 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish football player and coach. Although he had previously played for arch rivals Galatasaray Istanbul , he is strongly associated with the club through his work for Fenerbahçe Istanbul . He is seen by fans and clubs as one of the most important players in club history. He was the right-back of the legendary team that won the Turkish championship three times in the 1960/61 , 1963/64 and 1964/65 seasons . His younger brother is Metin Kurt , one of the most popular football players in Turkish football in the 1970s.

Player career

society

Kurt was born in Karakoç , a village in Kırklareli Province . To give their children a better perspective, Kurt's family moved to Istanbul. Kurt grew up partly in Istanbul and learned to play football on the streets of Istanbul. With club football he started Fenerbahçe Istanbul . After he was not accepted into the first team at the appropriate age, Kurt was hired by Istanbul's Karagümrük SK . Here he quickly made the leap to the professional team and then established himself as a regular player.

Through his services at Karagümrük, those responsible for the reigning Istanbul master Galatasaray became aware of Kurt and signed him for the summer of 1956. At the time of his change, there was no international professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ) was considered the most renowned. In addition, from 1936 an attempt was made to establish a kind of national championship with the Türkiye Maarif Mükafatı , a national football league of Turkey designed as a tournament and held at irregular intervals. Kurt made his debut for Galatasaray during the game in the Istanbul professional league on September 19, 1956 against Emniyet SK . In this game he played the full length of the game. In the further course of the season he was used in 13 other games. His team fought head-to-head for the Istanbul championship with arch-rivals Fenerbahçe this season and awarded the championship to their arch-rivals on the last day of the match due to the poorer goal difference. After the end of the season Galatasaray took part in the Federasyon Kupası (German Association Cup), Kurt was used in ten of the possible eleven matches during this tournament. His team finished the tournament in 2nd place behind arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . In the İstanbul league of the 1957/58 season, Kurt consolidated his regular place and completed almost all of his club's games. The team fought again with Fenerbahçe for the championship and this time decided the race for themselves. With this, Kurt also won his first title at the club level. In the season 1958/59 Kurt and his team awarded the championship again to Fenerbahçe.

From the spring of 1959 Kurt and his team took part in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig). This league replaced the regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as B. the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi, as the highest Turkish league. In the first season of the Millî Lig , the championship was played in two rounds. In the first round, the league system took place in two separate groups. In the second round, the two group winners decided the championship among themselves in a final with a return leg. Kurt and his team took part in the competition in the red group . Here he took first place in the table with Galatasaray and qualified for the final of the Turkish championship, which was played in two matches. Kurt, who was taken back to the team at the start of the season, played twelve of his team's fourteen possible league games and scored two goals. In the first leg of the final, Kurt's team defeated Fenerbahçe 1-0. The team lost 4-0 in the second leg, giving away the first Turkish championship to arch-rivals Fenerbahçe.

Kurt's time at Galatasaray, especially the last few seasons, has been fraught with constant controversy. Although he was almost always seeded in football, he fell out with the respective coaches and club officials for various reasons. This resulted in Kurt being suspended from the team squad several times. Due to his suspension, Kurt missed almost the entire second half of this season of his team. In the 1959/60 season the situation gradually came to a head. He was fined 500 Turkish Lira for indiscipline and then discussed with the Italian head coach Leandro Remondini . As a result, Remondini suspended Kurt from the team squad. Kurt then expressed his intention to want to leave Galatasaray at the end of the season, and received approval from the club to his intention to change. So Kurt tried to move abroad first. After he could not reach an agreement with some Italian, Spanish and French first division clubs, he began to negotiate with his old club Fenerbahçe, which Kurt had wanted to sign for a long time. An agreement was quickly reached with this club and so Kurt switched to arch rivals in the summer.

At Fenerbahçe, he gained a regular place within a few weeks. During his time at Fenerbahçe, he played almost all of his team's games and only dropped out due to injury or because he was banned, suspended or not eligible to play. In his first season for Fenerbahçe, his team and his old club Galatasaray, of all things, fought head-to-head for the Turkish championship for the entire season. The championship finally decided Fenerbahçe on the last day of the game by one point. With that, Kurt also won his first Turkish championship. At the end of this first season at Fenerbahçe, Kurt experienced several controversies with the club's management. Kurt complained several times after he hadn't received his salary and didn't show up for training in protest. That is why he was suspended before the end of the season and was therefore not available to the team for the last few days. For the new season he was taken back into the squad and played until the end of September 1961. In September 1961 he was drafted into military service and was therefore out of all league games until autumn 1963. Although he took part in some training sessions of his club with a special permit, he was not allowed to be used as a service provider in the competitive games. His team awarded the championship to Galatasaray in the two seasons in which Kurt was not allowed to be used. Returned to the team squad in the autumn of 1963, he immediately won a regular place. His team won the Turkish championship in the two following seasons 1963/64 and 1964/65 .

Kurt played for Fenerbahçe until the summer of 1966 and then moved within the league to city rivals Vefa Istanbul . For this club he played the next two seasons and was suspended several times from the squad due to various controversies that arose over unpaid salaries. During this two-year period, he only played six competitive games for this club. In the summer of 1967, the two sides agreed on a compromise. Kurt was loaned to the second division team Malatyaspor as a player- coach . Here he played for a year, then ended his playing career and then took over Malatyaspor as head coach.

National team

Kurt started his national team career in 1957. He was appointed to the squad of the Turkish B national teams as part of a test match and made his general international debut in the encounter against Spain's second selection. A year later he was nominated by national coach Leandro Remondini for the squad of the Turkish national team . Kurt made his international debut in May 1958 as part of a test match against the Dutch national team . After this encounter Kurt was one of the regularly nominated players of the Turkish A-selection for about three years.

After 1961 Kurt was not considered for the national team for about three years. It was not until 1964 that he was regularly appointed again by the new national coach Cihat Arman . His last international match was on October 9, 1965 against Czechoslovakia . In total he played 16 times for the Turkish national team. In addition to his work for the A national team, Kurt was also once active for the B national team.

Coaching career

Kurt took over his last club Malatyaspor as head coach immediately after his career . At this club he had already worked as a player-coach for a year . After taking care of this club until the summer of 1968, he moved to Fenerbahçe Istanbul and worked here as a youth coach for an indefinite period. For the 1970/71 season he took over Karabükspor as head coach. Here he quarreled with one of his players during a training session in November 1970. The controversy escalated and degenerated into a scuffle between Kurt and his player. Several players took part in this fight and knocked Kurt down. A few days after this incident, Kurt was dismissed from the club's management.

In the summer of 1973/74 Kurt took over the third division club Çorumspor . He led this club at the end of the season to the championship of the Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi and thus to promotion to the Türkiye 2nd Futbol Ligi . Then he resigned from his office.

In the 1975/76 season he began to coach the club in his home province of Kırklareli , Kırklarelispor , and worked here for about two seasons.

In the 1976/77 season Kurt looked after the second division side Sivasspor .

In the years 1980 to 1982 he coached this club again and then declared the end of his coaching career in the summer of 1982.

About six months after he had announced his coaching career, he made a comeback and took over the Istanbul club Davutpaşa SK .

He later worked again as a youth coach at his former club Fenerbahçe, where he resigned in the summer of 1989. In the first half of the 1990s he worked for Fenerbahçe as a talent scout.
