Şahin Alpay

Şahin Alpay (* 1944 in Ayvalık , Balıkesir ) is a Turkish political scientist, journalist, columnist and television presenter .

Life

Alpay holds a PhD in Political Science from Stockholm University in Sweden . He was with Doğu Perinçek a founding member of the Workers' Party (Türkiye İhtilalci İşçi Köylü Partisi). In 1982 he started as a columnist for Cumhuriyet newspaper , from 1992 to 1994 he wrote for Sabah , from 1994 to 2001 he was a columnist for Milliyet newspaper . In 2001 he was appointed professor of political science at the private Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul. He has also been writing for the Zaman newspaper since 2002 and was a moderator for CNN Türk .

Alpay's frank comments angered President Erdoğan . In 2015, he asked Bahçeşehir University to dismiss Alpay. On July 27, 2016, Şahin Alpay was arrested by the Turkish police in Istanbul during the "cleanup operations" after the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016 . He was arrested and has been held in Silivri's maximum security prison since then . In March 2018, he was released from custody and placed under house arrest.

In a lawsuit Alpays and also arrested Mehmet Altan the ECHR out these decided in March 2018 as previously the Constitutional Court of Turkey , the detention of the two is a violation of their fundamental rights.
