history

The first written mention of the free court Sebetin took place in 1235. The owner at that time was Hostislav von Sebetin, who had received the court and the associated lands for loyal service to the sovereign. A small church was built in Žebětín in the first half of the 14th century on the initiative of Queen Dowager Elisabeth Richza . 1370 there was a division of Žebětíner goods between the castle Spielberg , the castle Eichhorn and the Augustinian Abbey of St. Thomas in Brno. There is evidence of a parish in Žebětín since 1437. The Spielberger share acquired the Cistercian convent Aula Sanctae Mariae in Old Brno in 1517 . During the Swedish siege of Brno in the Thirty Years' War the church was ruined and the parish became extinct. In 1732 the church was rebuilt. The rectory was restored in 1787. The tripartite division of Žebětín remained until 1848. In the Eichhorn part there was a stately smithy.

After the abolition of patrimonial Žebětín formed a municipality in the Brno district from 1850. In 1869, 849 people lived in Žebětín's 155 houses. In the same year an independent parish was established again in Žebětín. A brick factory started operations in 1876, and in 1900 it expanded its production to include handmade roof tiles. In 1880 the community had 904 inhabitants and in 1890 there were 1001. In 1890 another brickworks was built, which was later bought by a competitor. In 1921 Žebětín came to the Okres Brno-venkov. In 1923 the construction of the road to Ostrovačice was completed. After the boggy road to Kohoutovice had been upgraded to a road in 1929, preparations began in April 1930 for the use of the new road as an international automobile competition venue. On September 28, 1930, the first road race on the 29.142 km long circuit of the Masaryk Ring , whose start and finish was at Bosonohy , started. In 1937 the races on the Masaryk-Ring were stopped. The Žebětín brickworks produced until 1937. In 1948, the Žebětín municipality was assigned to the Okres Brno-okolí. After its abolition, Žebětín came back to Okres Brno-venkov in 1961. The historic smithy, which had been owned by the Křivánek family since 1866, closed in 1970. The last master blacksmith left the equipment to the Technical Museum in Brno; it is now in the blacksmithing exhibition of the museum in Těšany . On November 26, 1971, it was incorporated into Brno as the Brno XVI-Žebětín district . Between 1976 and 1990 Žebětín was part of the Brno II district. In the 1970s, the brickworks were demolished. In 1984 the construction of the new Automotodrom Brno began in the forest area of Podkomorské lesy on the cadastral border between Žebětín and Ostrovačice , which was completed in 1986. The Žebětín district has existed since November 23, 1990. In 1991 Žebětín had 1872 inhabitants. In 2001 the place consisted of 656 houses in which 2070 people lived.
