"Awaken, My Love!" is the third studio album by the American musician Childish Gambino, the pseudonym of Donald Glover . It was released worldwide on December 2nd, 2016 by Glassnote Records. Instead of the usual rapping by Childish Gambino, the songs on the album are a fusion of psychedelic soul , funk and R&B . This has been described by critics as a bold departure from the previously dominant hip-hop style. "Awaken, My Love!" was developed by Glover and his longtime collaborator Ludwig Göransson produced .
The album received a largely positive response from music journalists and debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 . It also rose to second place on the Billboard Top R&B / Hip-Hop Albums chart. Before the release, the singles Me and Your Mama and Redbone were released .
At the Grammy Awards 2018 , the album was nominated as Album of the Year , among other things .
background
On June 17, 2016 he wrote the tweet "pharos.earth", which led to the download of a mobile app . It showed a small, blue planet while a clock was counting down to zero and during the countdown led the user to Joshua Tree with the dates for Glover's upcoming concerts in town with the option to purchase tickets. At the concert festival, which borrowed from Burning Man , the new album should be played for the first time. From September 3rd to 5th, almost three months before the album was released, Glover gave three concerts in Joshua Tree. Glover wore bright war paint on his body in the dark, wore plaits and a pink and yellow bast skirt ; his band members were dressed similarly. He played twelve songs at a time, only a few with rap influences, but mainly funk and jazz . The performances were visually accompanied on large screens around the stage with the help of Microsoft . By Kinect tracings of Glovers movements digital dancing figures were realized.
The singing of the individual songs on the album has different pitches. Contrary to initial suspicions of critics, this was not changed afterwards , but sung by Glover.

For the release of the album, the app was updated and a live video of the appearance in Joshua Tree of the single Me and Your Mama , which can also be viewed with VR glasses , was released. The record edition of the album, which was released on May 19, 2017, includes cardboard VR glasses and access to other VR concert videos.

"Awaken, My Love!" received mostly positive reviews from critics. At the rating aggregator Metacritic the album received 77/100, based on 25 reviews. Rolling Stone's Mosi Reeves wrote that " " Awaken, My Love! a captivating journey to the land of funk ”.

Gwilym Mumford of the Guardian noted that “The only thing that lets him down at times is the limits of his voice - he's not quite the range to accommodate Awaken's more pompous vocal lines. But that's only a minor complaint when there is so much to enjoy here. ”El Hunt of British DIY magazine described the album as“ colorful ”and“ brilliantly chaotic ”. For the New York Times , Jon Pareles wrote:
“It's at once a homage and a parody, equally aware of that era's excesses and its glories, of the way that the most memorable 1970s R&B merged sensuality, activism, humor, toughness, outlandishness, futurism, soul roots, wild eccentricity and utopian community spirit. That's an extremely high bar, but at its best, "Awaken, My Love!" recalls many of those virtues. "

Consequence of Sound journalist Adam Kivel wrote: "Childish Gambino's previous attempts at this kind of powerful expression had some of the same problems, but Glover's excruciating wailing is more powerful than his mischievous punchlines ." Allmusic's Tim Sendra called the album " an ice-cold explosion from start to finish. "
Matthew Strauss of Pitchfork wrote in his review:
“There are times, however, when that nodding feels more like mimicry than anything else. Maybe he'll figure out how to smuggle Donald Glover's heart into Childish Gambino's brain eventually, but if he hasn't figured out what he wants out of Childish Gambino yet, it's increasingly rewarding watching him try. ”

For the Observer , Kitty Empire wrote in her review that "Glover's genre ease is undeniable." The only point of criticism was that some songs wanted too much and should be more direct like the convincing Me and Your Mama . Brian Josephs from Spin praised the combination of pent-up passion and efficiency. Jonathan Wroble of Slant Magazine criticized the album as "a maddening ride with a credibility problem ." Glover confused his idols with muses .

The editorial team of Variance Magazine placed “Awaken, My Love!” at position 15 in their list of the 50 best albums of 2016.
The album also received a lot of praise in the German-speaking trade press. Ivo Ligeti from Musikexpress particularly emphasized Glover's voice, which, despite two uninspired pieces, always remains sovereign. Fabian Wolff from Spiegel Online called “Awaken, My Love!” even as a masterpiece.
Commercial win
"Awaken, My Love!" debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 chart with 101,000 sales . In addition, the album was streamed 41.5 million times in the first week . It had been sold 151,000 times by the end of December 2016.
Awards
The album was at the Grammy Awards in 2018 as Album of the Year and Best Urban Contemporary Album nominated. The single Redbone received a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance and was nominated for Record of the Year and Best R&B Song .
