(24712) Boltzmann is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 12, 1991 by the German astronomers Freimut Börngen and Lutz D. Schmadel at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in Thuringia .

The asteroid was named on August 4, 2001 after the Austrian physicist and philosopher Ludwig Boltzmann (1844–1906), who is considered to be the perfector of classical physics in the 19th century.
