(8240) Matisse is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on September 29, 1973 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made during the 2nd Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , 13 years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys .

Mean distance from the sun ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid lie within the respective limit values that are defined for the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa (also called Hertha family, according to (135) Hertha ).

(8240) Matisse was named on April 2, 1999 after the French painter Henri Matisse , who is one of the most important artists of Classical Modernism and one of the main representatives of Fauvism . As early as 1976, an impact crater on the southern hemisphere of the planet Mercury was named after Henri Matisse: Mercury crater Matisse .
