The 100th German Catholic Day took place from May 25 to May 29, 2016 in Leipzig . The host was the Diocese of Dresden-Meißen , which organized the Catholic Day with the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK). The motto was " See, there is man ". A total of around 40,000 people took part in the Catholic Day, significantly fewer than at the previous 99th German Catholic Day in Regensburg in 2014.

The Katholikentag began on the Leipzig market square . There a message of greeting from Pope Francis was played on the canvases , which he spoke in German. Federal President Joachim Gauck was present and addressed the participants.

There were around a thousand offers such as church services, concerts, panel discussions and workshops.

Central themes of the Katholikentag were migration and dealing with refugees in Germany and Europe .

Numerous events took place in the open air and in the city center. The locations included the provost church of St. Trinitatis , the Thomaskirche , the Nikolaikirche , the congress hall , the town hall , the Reformed Church , the Forum of Contemporary History , the Moritzbastei , the Gewandhaus and the opera .

Politicians such as Bundestag President Norbert Lammert ( CDU ), Federal Economics Minister Sigmar Gabriel ( SPD ), Alois Glück ( CSU ) and Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann ( Greens ) were also present.

The media received the complaints of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) that the organizers, in contrast to other party representatives, had not been invited to roundtables and public appearances. The organizers of the Catholic Day had wanted to offer the “right-wing populists no platform”.

Numerous schools in Leipzig were converted to accommodate visitors to the Catholic Day.

criticism

Criticism of the Kirchentag funding in public space.

It was criticized that the Catholic Day, as a religious event, was financed to a large extent with public funds. The ZdK applied for 1 million euros from the city, 3 million euros from the Free State of Saxony and 500,000 euros from the federal government. There was also a dispute over the payments in the city council. The Leipzig city councilor Ute Elisabeth Gabelmann ( Pirate Party Germany ) also criticized it.

According to the preliminary estimate by the Department of Culture, the approximately 40,000 visitors spent 7.2 million euros net. Of this, 3.5 million euros flowed back to the municipality in the form of additional tax revenue. Through rents, fees and services incurred in connection with the Catholic Day, she also received a further 4 million euros directly.
