20th Century Pictures (also: Twentieth Century Pictures ) was an American film production company . The company existed from 1933 to 1935 and was founded in 1933 by Joseph Schenck , the former president of the United Artists , Darryl F. Zanuck , the former head of production for Warner Brothers , William Goetz , a top manager of the Fox Film Corporation and Raymond Griffith in 1933. Nicholas Schenck and Louis B. Mayer , William Goetz's father-in-law, remained in the background as silent partners .

Joseph Schenck acted as president of the company, while Darryl F. Zanuck was responsible for the operative business as vice president. Zanuck persuaded Loretta Young and George Arliss , who were also under contract with Warner Brothers, to switch. Another star who moved to the company on the basis of a non-exclusive contract was Ronald Colman , who played the leading role in Clive of India , among others . 20th Century used the studios of other companies, preferably MGM, and sold its productions through United Artists. The company enjoyed rapid success and one of its first productions, The House of Rothschild, starring Arliss and Young, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture. The lavish film adaptation of Les Miserables was also nominated for Best Film in 1935. Disputes over further say in United Artist led the middle of 1935 finally to the union between 20th Century Pictures and under sequestration standing Fox Film Corporation for the newly established 20th Century Fox .
