3Com ( Com puter, Com munication, Com patibility) was a manufacturer of networking equipment headquartered in Marlborough , Massachusetts , USA .
history
The name 3Com was derived from the goal of the company " Com puter, Com munication and Com patibility" ( German computer, communication and compatibility ) ago. The company was founded in 1979 by Dr. Robert Metcalfe , who previously played a key role in the development of Ethernet technology at Xerox PARC . On November 11, 2009, 3Com and Hewlett-Packard announced that HP would purchase 3Com. HP invested US $ 7.90 per share for the takeover, a total of US $ 2.7 billion (approx. 1.98 billion euros). With the complete takeover on April 12, 2010, 3Com ended as an independent brand.
Products
3Com began marketing Ethernet cards; there were suitable models for almost all computer systems popular in the early 1980s, such as the LSI-11 , IBM-PC and VAX-11 . The brand name EtherSeries was introduced in the mid-1980s. A PC-based software product range was also introduced at the same time. The software offered distributed services in the LAN and was based on the XNS protocol. For example, there was a product called EtherShare (for networked file access), EtherPrint (for network printing), EtherMail (as an e-mail solution), and Ether- 3270 (for IBM host emulation).
The product range included the following hardware and software:
- 3 + Share , file and printer sharing
- 3 + mail, email
- 3 + Remote, XNS routing via a serial PC interface
- NetConnect, XNS routing for Ethernet
- 3Server , PC server for 3+ services
- 3Station , diskless workstation
- 3 + Open, file and printer sharing (based on LAN Manager )
- Etherterm, terminal emulation
- Etherprobe, LAN analysis software (sample)
- DynamicAccess, software products for Ethernet load balancing, response time and RMON -II monitoring
From 1987, after taking over Bridge Communications , 3Com also developed products that were not intended for PCs and 10BASE2 . Bridge Communications brought a number of XNS-compatible systems that worked on the Motorola 68000 basis:
- CS / 1, CS / 200 communication server ( Terminal Server )
- Ethernet bridges and XNS routers
- GS / 1-X.25, X.25 gateway
- CS / 1-SNA, SNA gateway
