Kyriakos Papadopoulos , as captain of the coastguard, controls the 4.1 mile wide passage between the island and the Turkish mainland from Lesbos. While previously only a few routine checks were necessary, in 2015 Kyriakos and his ten colleagues will be called almost every hour to save refugees in the Aegean from drowning.

The Greek journalist Daphne Matziaraki accompanied him and his team on October 28, 2015.
