Pope election

  • August 10th : As the successor to the deposed Pope Martin I , Eugene I is elected the new Pope .
  • September 12 : The deposed Pope Martin I is tried in Constantinople after he has spent a year in severe imprisonment on Naxos . Initially the decision was made on the death penalty, but the sentence was then converted into lifelong exile in the Crimea , where he died six months later as a result of the treatment inflicted on him.
