Western Europe
The Franconian caretaker Ebroin falls victim to an assassination attempt. The nobleman Ermenfrid is considered to be his murderer. The Franconian nobility chose Waratto as Ebroin's successor as a caretaker in Neustria . He received great support from Audoin , the Bishop of Rouen . Waratto ends the war with Pippin the Middle and recognizes him as Dux of Austrasia . The unity of the Franconian Empire is thereby restored.
Eastern Europe
The Bulgarian Empire under Knjas Asparuch is contractually recognized as an independent state by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine IV in the summer .
For unknown reasons - possibly in connection with the Council in Constantinople - Emperor Constantine IV had his two brothers and co-emperors Herakleios and Tiberios removed and mutilated. Instead, he makes his son Justinian II co-emperor.
Umayyad Empire in Syria and North Africa
Yazid I , second Umayyad caliph , appoints ʿUqba ibn Nāfiʿ as governor in Ifrīqiya . This subjugates the Christian Auraba- Berbers under Kusaila , who have to provide auxiliary troops for his march to the Atlantic.

Jayavarman I , ruler of the Cambodian empire Chenla , dies after a long reign. His successor will be his daughter Jayadevi , but she is not undisputed.

Pope election 681
- January 10th : Pope Agatho dies. The Sicilian Greek Leo II was elected as his successor in January . However, the consecration does not take place until August 17th . His assumption of office is delayed even further, as Emperor Constantine IV is delaying approval of his election until the conclusion of the Third Council of Constantinople.
Third Council of Constantinople
- March 28th : The third Council of Constantinople imposes the anathema on Pope Honorius I, who died in 638 , because he tolerated the doctrine of monotheletism, which was now regarded as heresy . In March, Patriarch Makarios I of Antioch is deposed as a supporter of monotheletism.
- September 16 : The third council of Constantinople (the sixth ecumenical council ) ends after almost a year: The Maronites do not recognize its resolutions to condemn the monotheletic doctrine , who then split off from the Catholic Church .
