The road begins in Leeds as the A64 (M) road, then runs as a primary road and in sections as a dual carriageway to the north-east and crosses the A1 (M) motorway at its junction with junction 44, continues at least four lanes to the east , bypassing Tadcaster and bypasses York south and east on a bypass, crosses the A19 road and turns, mostly only laid out in two lanes, to the northeast. It bypasses Malton with separate carriageways , continues in an east-northeast direction to Staxton , turns north and ends in Scarborough.
