course
Not far from Edinburgh Waverley Station , the A7 begins in the center of Edinburgh at the end of the A1 , which also marks the east end of Princes Street . Running south, it follows the North Bridge over the station building and leaves Edinburgh through the southeastern districts. The road crosses the Edinburgh bypass and is an important access route to the city center. On reaching Midlothian , the A7 separates the cities of Bonnyrigg and Dalkeith , crosses North and South Esk and connects the sparsely populated regions of the Council Area in a southeastern direction.
In the Scottish Borders , the A7 follows the course of the Gala Water , which it crosses in Galashiels . With this crossing, the course of the A7 bends and henceforth takes a south-south-west direction. Following the Tweed for a few kilometers , the road crosses it, follows the course of the Ettrick Water and reaches Selkirk . After crossing the Teviot several times in and beyond Hawick , the road reaches Dumfries and Galloway , where it follows the course of the Mosspaul Burn and then that of the Ewes Water and leads through Langholm .
Following the Esk in a southerly direction, the A7 passes the English-Scottish border and runs for its last 19 km through the English county of Cumbria . At Longtown it crosses the Esk and a few kilometers south of the Lyne . At a roundabout when crossing the M6, the A7 crosses the A689 (Carlisle - Hartlepool ) and reaches Carlisle by crossing the Eden on the listed Eden Bridge . There it ends in the city center at the end of the A6 .
