The Associazione Calcio Bellinzona is a football club from the city of Bellinzona in Ticino . The club, founded in 1904, has been playing in the Promotion League , the third highest Swiss league , since the 2018/19 season .

Club history

The club was founded in 1904 as the Football Club Bellinzona . In the following year, FC Bellinzona split into FC Ticino and FC Elvezia. In 1906 the two clubs merged again and gave birth to FC Juventus, which in 1909 again took the name FC Bellinzona. In 1913 he was accepted into the Swiss Football Association . The club took its current name, AC Bellinzona, after the merger with AC Daro in 1926.

The greatest success in the club's history was winning the Swiss Football Championship in 1948 . In addition, AC Bellinzona made it to the cup finals three times. In the 2007/08 season , AC Bellinzona won the barrage first leg for promotion against FC St. Gallen 3-2. AC Bellinzona won the second leg 2-0 and thus rose to the Super League with a total score of 5-2. At the end of the 2010/11 season , AC Bellinzona was relegated to the Challenge League. The Barrage second leg against Servette FC Genève ended after a 1-0 win in Bellinzona with 3-1, total score 3-2 for Servette FC.

On April 22, 2013, the bankruptcy of AC Bellinzona, which was in debt with CHF 8.5 million, opened. In mid-May 2013, the Ticino appellate court revoked the bankruptcy. For the 2013/14 season, the club was only granted a license for the 1st league promotion , which meant relegation had to be accepted. Estimated debts of EUR 3.3 million would have had to be repaid by August 9, 2013 to prevent bankruptcy.

On September 17, 2013, the bankruptcy court took the teams from the championship operation, whereby the AC Bellinzona was led at the bottom of the table and all points were canceled. The corporation including the professional team were dissolved.

In March 2014, the Ticino Football Association accepted a request that AC Bellinzona could start over in the 2nd division , the highest regional league, instead of the 5th division for the 2014/15 season . For this purpose, the number of participants was temporarily increased to 15 for one season.

After two promotions, AC Bellinzona has been playing in the first division since the 2016/17 season . After missing the next promotion to the Promotion League in 2017 , this was achieved a year later after victories against the Black Stars Basel and Red Star Zurich .

European Cup balance

In the 2008/09 season, AC Bellinzona celebrated its international premiere. As a cup finalist in 2008, they were eligible to start the UEFA Cup, as the cup winners FC Basel had already qualified as champions for the Champions League. The home games of the qualifying round were played by the Ticino in the nearby Lugano Stadio di Cornaredo , the home ground of arch-rivals AC Lugano , as their own Stadio Comunale did not meet UEFA standards. In the first main round they switched to St. Jakob-Park in Basel because of the expected larger audience.

In the first main round, AC Bellinzona ended up against the Turkish top club Galatasaray Istanbul .
