Model of an ADATS guided missile

ADATS is a mobile, all-weather, short-range guided missile system that can combat both air and ground targets. ADATS stands for A ir- D efense and A NTI T ank S ystem.

development

In the early 1980s, the Swiss defense company Oerlikon-Contraves began developing the system. The missile was developed by the Martin Marietta Group in the USA . The system was ready for series production in 1988. When it went into service, ADATS was the world's first guided missile system that could combat both ground and air targets.

ADATS was selected for procurement by the US Army and was given the provisional type designation XMIM-146 ADATS . In the early 1990s, with the end of the Cold War, procurement was stopped.

technology

The system consists of a compact weapon turret, a sensor unit with a radar system and two quadruple tubes for the guided weapons. The entire system can be installed on various vehicles such as the M113 and the M2 / M3 Bradley . There is also a variant that is installed in a container complex. The target acquisition and tracking can be done with radar , TV, infrared ( FLIR ) or residual light amplifier . The guided missile is guided by means of a coded CO 2 laser, which is directed from the ground station to the rear of the missile ( beam steering ). By coding it, the missile can determine its position in relation to the center of the laser beam and, if necessary, make corrections. In order to hit the target, the line of sight of the target tracking device is kept in line with the laser beam.

When used on the ground , it is suitable for combating combat aircraft , helicopters and cruise missiles . In the ground-to-ground operation , battle tanks and other vehicles as well as bunkered positions can be fought. When fighting battle tanks, the guided missiles have a penetration capacity of 900 mm of armor steel .

status

The ADATS was offered for sale in Switzerland and the USA. The system was tested by both states. In the end, neither of the two states procured the system. Exports went to the following countries:
