A Kiss to Build a Dream On
A Kiss to Build a Dream On is a song by Harry Ruby (music), Bert Kalmar and Oscar Hammerstein (lyrics) that was released in 1951.
Ruby wrote the melody Moonlight in the Meadows as early as 1935 . For the Marx Brothers film Scandal in the Opera (1935) it received a new title and also a new text by Bert Kalmar and Oscar Hammerstein, but was not used in the film. The song first became known as A Kiss to Build a Dream On by László Kardos ' film musical Tödliches Pflaster Sunset Strip (original title: The Strip. 1951), with Mickey Rooney , Sally Forrest and William Demarest in the leading roles. The song, which featured in the film by Kay Brown and Louis Armstrong , received an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 1952 .
During the late December 1950 filming for The Strip at MGM Studios, Louis Armstrong was accompanied by Jack Teagarden , Barney Bigard , Earl Hines , Arvell Shaw and Cozy Cole . The 78er recorded on July 24, 1951 by Louis Armstrong / Sy Oliver ( Decca 27720 or Brunswick 82521) entered the US charts in November 1951, where it stayed for eleven weeks. In Australia, the Armstrong single was a number one hit . In the field of jazz , the song was covered by Jimmy Dorsey , Tex Beneke , Al Cohn / Freddie Green / Joe Newman , Jonah Jones and Ernestine Anderson in the 1950s . Successful in the charts in the 1950s was the recording by the Hugo Winterhalter Orchester (with vocalist Johnny Parker, RCA Victor 47-4455). Even Bob Eberly (Capitol 7285) coverte the song; later he was also recorded by Richard Chamberlain ( MGM Records 13075) and Willie Humphrey .
