A Place to Live is about a boy who in the slums of Philadelphia lives. The film shows his daily routine from the time he returns from school in the afternoon to his parents' rat-infested three-room apartment until the next morning he goes to school. The film was an attempt to improve living in Philadelphia and featured dramatic scenes.

The film is based on a survey by the Philadelphia Housing Association, which was designed to find out how much misery there is in a modern city like Philadelphia in certain areas. The Philadelphia Housing Association, a settlement society, also acted as a sponsor. The 16-minute film was nominated for an Oscar in 1942.
