A Sun by Rising Set is the debut album by the Aachen progressive rock band The Void's Last Stand . The concept album was released in 2009. Before the album was released on the Long Hair Music label in December 2009, a very small edition was already released in autumn 2009 on a self-published CD, which is now out of print.

construction

The album consists of only two pieces, each about 25 minutes in length. The second track, Under the Ardent Sun , is followed by an approximately five-minute hidden track after 19:57 minutes , which is part of the mentioned song with German vocals.

background

The album tells the story of the young writer Elilah, who is haunted by the spirit of the late emperor Elagabal in a drug-induced psychosis . The latter takes possession of Elilah and takes him on a journey into the past to show him the truth about his legendary life. Elagabal assigns Elilah to avenge him for the myths and lies against humanity. Due to his deep belief in God, Elilah finally manages to free himself from Elagabal's spell. Singer Jonas Wingens also wrote his thesis on the Roman emperor Elagabal.

reception

The music on the album is often compared to The Mars Volta , Frank Zappa , Nektar , Ruins or Captain Beefheart . The multitude of musical influences is often mentioned. The music magazine eclipsed read:

“[...] two 25-minute compositions that, mostly at breathtaking speed, mess up pretty much everything that has been extravagant prog in the last forty years: tricky, weird guitars à la Cpt. Beefheart , hypnotically repeating 5 and 7 rhythms with throbbing bass that reminds one of magma , and one or the other jazzy twisted Canterbury riff. "
