A Time for Choosing refers to a speech by Ronald Reagan from the US presidential election campaign of 1964. He gave it in support of the then Republican candidate Barry Goldwater .

In the US , the speech is also known as The Speech . It was first broadcast on October 27, 1964 as part of a TV program called Rendezvous with Destiny , which promoted the candidate Goldwater (Reagan used the phrase “You and I have a rendezvous with destiny ”). It was then repeated several times for a week. Although Goldwater achieved a historically poor result and lost to Lyndon B. Johnson by a huge margin, the speech marked the beginning of the political career of Ronald Reagan, who shortly afterwards successfully ran for governor of California .

In the speech, Reagan's future program became visible, he advocated the liberation of "millions of people, enslaved behind the Iron Curtain" in foreign policy and in domestic politics for the greatest possible suppression of state influence. In several examples, Reagan speaks of big government and too high taxes and calls for an end to the war on poverty initiated by President Johnson . On foreign policy issues he is against the risk of appeasement and wants peace through strength .
