Aarhus Letbane is a light rail system in Aarhus and the surrounding communities. With this project, the Aarhus tram is revived. Regular operations between Aarhus Hovedbanegård (Central Station) and Universitetshospitalet began on December 22, 2017. The entire network went into operation on April 30, 2019.

history

Letbane in Aarhus Central Station

Letbane took over some of the existing railway infrastructure , namely the two non- electrified railway lines Grenaabanen and Odderbanen ( Aarhus Nærbane ), and expanded them to include a tram line leading through the northern parts of Aarhus.

Preparations

In June 2012, the government decided to electrify not only the new tram line in downtown Aarhus, but also the existing lines between Odder and Grenaa . The main reason for this was that suitable trains with hybrid drives were not available. A grant of 100 million crowns was made available for this.

Also in 2012, the Lov om Aarhus Letbane ( German  law on Aarhus-Letbane ) founded Aarhus Letbane I / S, a company to implement the project and in which the city of Aarhus, the state , represented 47.2% by the Ministry of Transport (Transportministeriet), with 47% and the Midtjylland region with 5.8%. The three co-owners initially held shares in the amount of 500 million kroner (city of Aarhus), 600 million kroner (state) and 78 million kroner (region Midtjylland).

Another law passed in 2015 to convert the state's share in the company into a grant and to restructure the company. After that, only the city of Aarhus with 87.7% and the Midtjylland region with 12.3% are represented as shareholders. They had to increase their company shares. In addition, the state gave a further grant of 330 million crowns.

Construction work

End of the line at Grenaa station

In the city of Aarhus, a new double-track tram line has been built, which leads north of the Skolebakken stop to the converted existing line and via Skejby to Lystrup, where it joins the Greenabane again.

For the electrification of the routes around 3000 Oberleitungsmasten were set.

Numerous straightening of the route took place between Ryomgård and Grenaa to enable the maximum speed of 100 km / h. For this purpose, twelve level crossings had to be improved in terms of safety and equipped with half barriers. The Trustrup stop was expanded to become a crossing station . In Aarhus Hauptbahnhof , a new track 0 was laid between the previous track 1 and the reception building . Construction work on the route to Odder was completed in October 2017, and between Aarhus and Grenaa in May 2018.

On January 15, 2016, as a result of construction work, train traffic on the Grenaa – Aarhus section and on the weekend between Aarhus and Odder ended. On August 28, 2016, the Aarhus Nærbane railway between Greena and Odder was completely closed. Rail replacement traffic was carried out by Midttrafik .

opening

Welcome banner for the opening

The opening was originally planned for September 23, 2017, but was postponed at short notice due to pending permits from the traffic authorities.

The free opening trains finally ran between Aarhus H (main station) and Universitetshospitalet on December 21, 2017 . Regular operations on this section of the route began on December 22, 2017.

The start of operations on the section to the north to Grenaa took place after several delays on April 30, 2019, as the corresponding permit was also pending here. The opening ceremony was held on May 12, 2019.

business

scope

The operation has not yet fully started, as remaining work is pending. The Hessel and Thorsager stops will not be served for the time being. The following information on traffic frequency refers to working days, unless otherwise stated.

  • The trains run every half hour on weekdays and every hour on weekends in the southern section between Odder and Aarhus with an additional departure during the weekday rush hour in the morning and in the afternoon. Since April 30, 2019 there have been four departures per hour between Mårslet and Aarhus on weekdays.
  • On the inner-city section between Universitetshospitalet and Lisbjergskolen there is a half-hourly service.
  • In the northern section, the light rail runs every hour between Ryomgård and Grenaa and every half hour between Ryomgård and Aarhus H (Central Station). As soon as the work is finally completed and the permit is available, the maximum speed is to be increased from 80 km / h to 100 km / h, which will then also enable the half-hourly operation to Grenaa.

The Letbane consists of two light rail lines:

line Line route
L1 Grenaa  - Ryomgård  - Hornslet  - Lystrup  - Østbanetorvet  - Aarhus H  - Mårslet (- Odder )
L2 Lystrup / Lisbjergskolen  - Lisbjerg  - Aarhus Universitetshospital , Skejby  - Aarhus H - Mårslet - Odder

Internally, the network is divided into several route sections:

route Line route Kilometrage
1 Aarhus H-Odder km 202.5 - km 9.8
2 Lystrup / Lisbjergskolen — Aarhus H via Randersvej km 216.7 / km 0.5 - km 202.5
2 Nørreport — Aarhus H km 204.0 - km 202.5
3 Grenaa — Østbanetorvet– (Nørreport) km 68.9 - km 1.9

Incidents

After 15 small accidents in 2018, the first fatal accident occurred on July 6, 2019: a train and a car collided at a level crossing between the Kolind and Trustrup stops that was open but secured with a signal system . Two people died and two others survived seriously injured. None of the passengers on the train were injured, and the driver suffered a shock. The cause of the accident is not yet known. The warning system for road traffic is said to have worked. By the end of January 2020, the number of incidents rose to 28.

vehicles

Passenger compartment

In December 2012, four locomotive manufacturers were pre-qualified to procure the trains. Stadler received the order for the delivery of 26 vehicles in July 2014. The order was divided into 14 low-floor light rail vehicles of the Variobahn type and 12 tram-trains of the Tango type . The vehicles are to be differentiated according to the requirements of the Trafik-, Bygge og Boligstyrelsen ( German  traffic, building and real estate authorities ) with light and sound signals as a tram compared to other road users.

Variobahn

The six-axle trains are designed for a maximum speed of 80 km / h and for a contact wire voltage of 750 V. They are 32,560 mm long, 2,650 mm wide and 3,540 mm high. The floor height is 385 mm with an entry height of 350 mm.

The drive power is 360 kW (8 × 45 kW). The train offers 84 seats and 132 standing places.

Tram-Train Tango

The eight-axle trains are designed for a maximum speed of 100 km / h and for a contact wire voltage of 750 V. The vehicles are 39,987 mm long, 2,650 mm wide and 3,650 mm high. The floor height is 390 mm.

The drive power is 440 kW. The train has 108 seats and standing room for 148.
