Abdoulaye Wade (born May 29, 1926 in Kébémer , Louga region ) is a Senegalese lawyer and politician. From 2000 to April 1, 2012 he was the state president of the country.

Life

Abdoulaye Wade graduated from the École normal William Ponty in Sébikotane in 1947 with a diploma. After attending the Lycée Condorcet in Paris , he studied law and economics at the University of Grenoble and received his doctorate .

Wade worked as a lawyer in France for a short time until he returned to Dakar , where he also worked as a lawyer and taught at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar . In 1974 he founded the Democratic Party of Senegal (PDS), a liberal party. He was elected to the National Assembly and served as Minister of State in President Abdou Diouf's government from 1991 to 1992 and from 1995 to 1997 .

From February to May 1994, Wade was imprisoned on charges of conspiracy . After four defeats to the incumbent, he won the 2000 presidential election against the incumbent Abdou Diouf and has been president since then.

In the 2007 presidential election, Wade was again the favorite. On February 28, 2007, the incumbent was confirmed as head of state according to the preliminary results. In the first count, the then 80-year-old achieved 55.7 percent in all 35 electoral districts and thus the absolute majority . The socialist opposition announced the contestation of the election results, while the Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS ) saw the conduct of the election as transparent and free.

The constitution of the West African country actually provides for a maximum of two terms of office for the president. The Supreme Court, however, found a legal loophole for Wade; therefore, he was approved for a third term in the 2012 presidential election . The opposition then called for protests, which were bloodily suppressed by the police . Presidential candidate Cheikh Bamba Dièye was also among the injured .

In the first ballot on February 26, 2012, none of the candidates won an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 25, he was defeated by Macky Sall and handed over to him on the evening of the election. Around 300 international observers followed the election.

Abdoulaye Wade is married to Viviane Wade (* 1932) from France . They have two children together: Karim Wade (* 1968) and daughter Sindjely Wade.

He was one of the signatories of the Amman Message ( Amman Message ).
