Abel Joseph, comte Hugo (born November 15, 1798 in Paris ; † February 7, 1855 there ) was a French essayist . He was the older brother of Victor Hugo , his parents were the General Joseph Léopold Sigisbert Hugo and Sophie Trébuchet.

Life

Abel Hugo was the only one of the general's three sons, who followed his father to Spain when he was in the service of King Joseph Bonaparte (1808–1813). As a 13-year-old he entered the Bonaparte school and was subsequently the only French page at the Spanish court. After the fall of Napoleon, he served in the French general staff until 1818 . In December 1819 he founded the magazine “Le Conservateur littéraire” with his brothers and took on tasks in sales and administration. With the death of his father in 1828 he inherited the title of count. In 1833 he worked for the Revue des Deux Mondeswith, then also with the magazines “Le Spectateur militaire” and “Journal de l'Armée”. In 1835 he published “France pittoresque” (3 volumes, sorted by department), 1836 to 1843 “Histoire générale de la France par les manuscrits” (5 volumes), and finally in 1838 “France militaire” (1792–1837, also 5 volumes).

family

Abel Hugo married the painter Louise Rose Julie du Vidal (or Duvidal) de Montferrier (1798–1865), a student of Jacques-Louis David , in 1827 . She was a daughter of Jean Jacques Duvidal de Montferrier (1752-1829), 2nd Marquis de Montferrier, and a second cousin of Jean-Jacques Régis de Cambacérès (1753-1824). The couple had two children:
