Seedling from an old French grape variety

List of grape varieties

The Abouriou red grape is mainly grown in south-west France . The 'Abouriou' variety is probably an autochthonous variety of the Lot-et-Garonne department and was created as a seedling of an old French grape variety of unknown origin. Numa Naugé, who lives in Sénézelles near Casseneuil , presented it to the public in 1882 and reported that the seedling had been discovered 40 years earlier on a stone wall of a ruin near Villeréal . “Abouriou” is the local dialect name for the expression “early maturity”.

Ampelographic features

The grapes are medium in size, very compact, and the berries are black in color. They are round and very juicy. The early ripening variety is high-yielding and fungus-resistant. The wine is very dark and has fruity notes of strawberry, raspberry and currant; but it lacks the acid .

distribution

The population of 'Abouriou' is dwindling. In 2007, 388 hectares of vineyards were raised in France (source ONIVINS ). 'Abouriou' is permitted in red wines from AC Côtes du Marmandais and Vins d'Estaing as well as in several Vin de Pays in the Sud-Ouest and Loire regions . The variety is also grown in Australia and California (→ Viticulture in California ). Here the synonyms Beaujolais or Gamay Beaujolais led to some confusion, as it could easily be confused with the real Gamay vine. Paul Truel of the University of Montpellier also identified the variety known in California as 'Early Burgundy' as 'Abouriou'.

Synonyms

The grape variety Abouriou is also known under the names Beaujolais, Early Burgundy or Early Burgundy, Gamay Beaujolais, Gamay du Rhône, Loubéjac, Malbec argenté, Négret de la Canourgue, Noir hâtif, Pinotou, Plant Abouriou, Précoce Naugé, Préco de Bourg and Préco de Bourgé known.
