Abruka ( German  Abro , Swedish Abrö ) is an Estonian island in the Baltic Sea . It is located 6 km south of Saaremaa in the Gulf of Riga and belongs to the Moonsund Islands . It is administratively part of the village of Abruka (Abruka küla) in the rural community Saaremaa ( Saare district ).

The island has an area of ​​8.78 km² and is mostly covered by deciduous forest. In front of it are several small islands, including Vahase , Kasselaid and Linnusitamaa (literally in German: "Vogelkot-Insel").

Almost thirty people currently live permanently on Abruka. A memorial for five residents who perished in the sinking of the ferry Estonia is located in the Abruka Forest Cemetery.

There are two lighthouses on the island .

From Roomassaare (district and port of Kuressaare ) on Saaremaa there are regular ferry connections to Abruka.
