Abbot Bishop

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An abbot- bishop is an abbot who has also received episcopal ordination. As abbot, he is the head of an abbey and mostly at the same time, as bishop, the head of a diocese . In early Christianity in Europe there were also abbeys whose abbots had the rank of bishop without presiding over a diocese or a territorial abbey .

This type of merging of offices is rare today - at most it is still common in missions .

Accordingly, an Abbot Bishop is:

  • an abbot who is bishop of a diocese, or
  • an abbot who is titular bishop .

An abbot of a territorial abbey is normally not an abbishop. He has the jurisdiction of a bishop, but not his ordination .
