Acanthocephalus lucii is a type of scratchworm (Acanthocephala), which occurs as an intestinal parasite mainly in fresh and brackish water fish and causes acanthocephalosis in them .

features

Female animals reach a body length of 8 to 21 millimeters, the males remain significantly smaller with a maximum of around 4 to 7.5 millimeters. The fuselage is much wider at the front than at the back. The approximately 0.5 to 0.7 millimeter long proboscis (proboscis) is short and club-shaped and has 12 to 16 rows of hooks of 7 to 9 hooks each without an anterior hook root process, whereby these become smaller towards the rear.

The eggs are long-oval and have only thin covering membranes. They have an average length of 103 and an average width of 14 to 16 micrometers.

Way of life

As an adult, Acanthocephalus lucii lives as an intestinal parasite , especially in the intestines of freshwater fish, especially carp fish (Cyprinidae). It can also occur in other freshwater species as well as in brackish and saltwater species such as various flatfish and herring .
