Adalbero of Reims († January 23, 989 ) from the Wigeriche family was Archbishop of Reims from 969 until his death .

He was a son of Count Gozelo in Bidgau and Methingau , and Uda von Metz, consequently a brother of Count Gottfried , called the Prisoner , of Verdun , on his father's side a nephew of Bishop Adalbero I of Metz , on his mother's side a nephew of Archbishop Wichfrid from Cologne .

As a loyal follower of Emperor Otto I , he became Archbishop of Reims and Arch Chancellor in 969 . He turned his residence into an intellectual and artistic center and decorated his cathedral with bronzes and windows. He made Gerbert von Aurillac his scholastic .

In the conflict between the Carolingians Lothar († 986) and Ludwig V († 987), the Duke Karl of Lower Lorraine , the German Emperor Otto II and Hugo Capet , in which he was deeply involved, he narrowly escaped a high treason trial in Compiègne , first 985, then 987 one more time.

In 979 he anointed Louis V , the last Carolingian , as king of France, as did his ally Hugo Capet on July 3, 987 , after his election, who he presided over, and finally his son, later Robert II.
