Adam Pastor: 17th century engraving

Adam Pastor (actually Rudolf Martens ; * after 1500 in Dörpen ( Emsland ), † after 1560 in Überwasser ) was an anti-Trinitarian Anabaptist and a leading figure of the North German Mennonites in the 16th century.

Live and act

Adam Pastor was born between 1500 and 1510 in Dörpen, Emsland. After training as a Catholic pastor, he took up a pastor's position in Aschendorf in Emsland in 1531 . Probably under the influence of Jan Matthys , Pastor joined the Reformation Anabaptist movement a short time later . After the failure of the militant Anabaptists of Münster , Pastor joined the Anabaptists led by Menno Simons and Dirk Philips , who deliberately represented pacifist positions in the spirit of the Stäbler . Pastor strongly criticized the messianic ideas of the Dutch Anabaptist leader David Joris .

As early as 1542, Pastor was appointed one of five new Mennonite leaders. However, Pastor was soon in opposition to Dirk Philips. Unlike Philips, Pastor increasingly took anti-Trinitarian positions and rejected an overly strict congregation ban. After the Anabaptist synods held in Emden (East Frisia) and Goch (Lower Rhine) in 1547, pastor was finally banned by Dirk Philips. However, Philips' ban was controversial, so Pastor continued his activities. The party of Adamieten named after him was formed . A disputation with other Mennonite leaders in Lübeck in 1552 did not bring any agreement and so Pastor was ultimately completely excluded.

In his book Underscheit tusschen right-wing Leer and Valsche Leer , published after 1552 , Pastor denounced the machinations of Catholicism and Davidjorism, named after Davis Joris. Pastor died between 1560 and 1570. The exact place of his death is not known. It could be Emden or Münster .
