Adam Simons (born February 25, 1770 in Amsterdam , † January 5, 1834 ibid) was a Dutch Reformed theologian, poet, rhetorician and historian.

Life

The son of Pieter Simons and Neltje van der Sluis initially attended the Latin school in his hometown. He then frequented the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam and enrolled at the University of Leiden on November 12, 1787 to pursue a degree in theology. In 1792 he completed his theological probationary year, became pastor in Lage Vuursche in 1793 and pastor in Thamen near Uithoorn in 1799 .

His work in the field of Dutch literature prompted the curators of the University of Utrecht to appoint Simons as professor of Dutch literature and rhetoric on December 5, 1815. After he had been awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy on March 20, 1816 at the Utrecht University, he took up his professorship on March 25, 1816 with the introductory speech Over den were denser .

In this function he also participated in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1832/33 , which task he resigned with the speech Oratio de Vita et meritis .

In addition to his poetic publications, Simons also dealt with historical questions about the Netherlands. In the case of the latter, his collaboration on the eight-volume work Nederlansche historien (Amsterdam 1820-24), which he worked on together with Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft and Matthijs Siegenbeek , should be emphasized . But his lectures on ethics and Nordic mythology should also be mentioned in this context. He had also received honorable appointments to various scientific societies. He was a member of the Royal Dutch Institute of Science in Amsterdam , the Society of Dutch Literature in Leiden, a member of the Dutch Society for Arts and Sciences in Haarlem, a member of the Zeeland Society for Science and Arts in Middelburg and a member of the Provincial Utrecht Society for Science and arts.
