In 1894 Müller returned to Rome. There he taught astronomy and occasionally mathematics and geology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and was also director of the Vatican Observatory . On September 29, 1909, Müller was appointed rector of the Collegium Germanicum . After the outbreak of the First World War he was forced to leave Rome and end his academic career. He spent the rest of his life in pastoral care: from 1914 to 1918 in Feldkirch , Austria , from 1918 to 1919 in Düsseldorf , from 1919 to 1922 and again from 1927 to 1931 in Trier , from 1922 to 1927 in Luxembourg , from 1931 to 1933 in Dortmund and from 1933 to 1938 Bad Godesberg .
