After graduating from high school in his hometown, Adolf Poinsignon began studying law in Heidelberg in 1856 . Just one year later he joined the 2nd Baden Infantry Regiment in Mannheim as a recruit . There he decided to take up the officer career. In the course of mobilization in 1859 he was promoted to lieutenant and transferred to the 3rd Baden Infantry Regiment in Rastatt . After the war he was transferred to the 6th Baden Infantry Regiment in Constance and promoted to captain and company commander in 1872 . In 1873 there was another transfer to the 7th Rhenish Infantry Regiment in Thionville and Trier .

City archivist in Freiburg

When his regiment commander in Trier commissioned him to write a history of the regiment, Poinsignon came into closer contact with historical research. The work did not go beyond preliminary studies, as he left the military in 1879 and was instructed in the historical work at the Badisches Landesarchiv in Karlsruhe under the direction of Karl Roth von Schreckenstein .

In the following year, 1880, he took over the management of the Freiburg City Archives .

In addition to his work as an archivist, Poinsignon wrote numerous fundamental publications on the history of the city and the region. After giving up his job in Freiburg in 1891, he moved back to his home town of Konstanz, where he died on the night of February 22nd to 23rd, 1900 as a result of an attack in Kreuzlingen .
