The Peace of Munster by Ter Borch

Gerard ter Borch's history picture with the full title Signing the Peace Treaty of Münster from 1648 records the solemn signing of the peace treaty concluded between Spain and the Netherlands, which sealed the end of the Thirty Years' War . The state ceremony takes place in the town hall of Münster. The negotiators in the company of their delegations have gathered around a round table and are about to swear the contract. A golden chandelier floats above the assembly with a crowned Madonna in a halo, which emblematically emphasizes the divine blessing that should lie on the treaty .

Six Dutch people raised their hands in an oath, including Adriaen Clant tot Stedum. Three Spaniards swear by hand on the Bible .
