Aeugst am Albis (officially called Aeugst until 1976 and popularly known today) is a municipality in the Affoltern district of the canton of Zurich in Switzerland .

geography

Historical aerial photo from 2000 m by Walter Mittelholzer from 1925

Aeugst and the associated hamlets Aeugstertal , Müliberg , Habersaat and Wengi are almost in a circle around the wooded Aeugsterberg 829  m above sea level. M. around. The Reppisch forces its way past this through the upper Reppisch Valley to Birmensdorf . Topographically, the municipality is divided into two parts: the Reppischtal and the southern slope on the Aeugsterberg, which extends into the Jonental . Accordingly, the waters of the municipality flow on the one hand with the Reppisch into the Limmat and on the other hand with the Jonenbach into the Reuss , until they unite in Switzerland's moated castle .

The Türlersee , from which the Reppisch rises, is an important local recreation area and is largely located in the municipality of Aeugst. The lowest point in the community is Wengi in the Jonental at 536  m above sea level. M. and the highest is at 885  m above sea level. M. on the crest of the Albis.

history

The first settlements in the municipality was Aeugst, at that time Ousta which was first made tangible in 876/887. The Borsikon , which no longer exists today and was located in what is now Aeugstertal , is mentioned as Porsinchova in 883. In the Chloster house in Aeugstertal there was the Beguine monastery , which was closed before 1500 . Aeugst has been part of the Knonau Bailiwick since 1512 .

The Aeugster Church was built in 1667. There were also military arguments with which the theologian Hansrudolf Wirz was able to convince the cantonal government of the construction project for the Aeugster Church. The location of the church would be "a shock to the enemy in an emergency," he wrote to Zurich. The five catholic places (LU, UR, SZ, UW, ZG) were probably meant, the confessionalization was not yet complete.

economy

In addition to agriculture, there was a textile industry in the Aeugstertal, especially in the 19th century . In the Riedhof mine in the hamlet of Aeugstertal, coal was mined primarily during the Second World War. With the importance of hydropower as a source of energy, the location also lost its attraction. Today Aeugst is a rural agglomeration of Zurich .
