Africell is a mobile phone company in Africa . Africell operates its business in the West African countries of Gambia and Sierra Leone as well as in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda . The company is a subsidiary of the Lebanese telecommunications company Lintel . In 2014 Africell had 12 million customers.

Products

Prepaid cards are sold for the broad market and mobile phone contracts for companies and business people . The sending of the Short Message Service (SMS) is also possible in the GSM network (GSM 900 network). In addition to its domestic market in Lebanon, Lintel also has business in Morocco and Saudi Arabia .

Gambia

In Gambia, Africell has more than 1.3 million customers (as of 2014) and is number one in the Gambian mobile market, ahead of Gamtel , the mobile communications subsidiary of the Gambia Telecommunications Company , and Comium Mobile , which entered the market in 2007 . Africell started in the Greater Banjul Area in 2001 and in the other parts of the country the following year. In this expansion stage a further nine cities were recorded, in a further stage a further seven cities were connected. However, reception is not yet guaranteed across the whole country, but the metropolitan areas, especially the Kombo-St. Mary Area , are covered. The head office is in Banjul .

Africell Gambia has roaming contracts with 140 other mobile phone companies. With the 120,000 tourists visiting Gambia each year, Africell receives high income from conducting conversations. Africell has a contract with Telefónica O₂ Europe in Germany .

The company has sponsored the Sait Matty Football Club from Bakau since 2005 , and since then they have also had the Africell name in their team name.

Congo, DR

Africell started its business in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in November 2012. By the end of 2014, the company already had seven million customers. Currently only the provinces of Kinshasa and Congo Central, as well as larger towns in the province of Katanga, are covered by Africell. Africell DRC has licenses to operate a 2G and 3G network. Headquarters is in Kinshasa .

Sierra Leone

In Sierra Leone, sales began on February 28, 2005, and over 35,000 customers were acquired within the first six months. In September 2007, Africell already had 400,000 customers in Sierra Leone, and in 2014 a good 2.9 million customers. The head office is in Freetown .

Uganda

Africell entered the Ugandan market in November 2014 with the acquisition of Orange Uganda . As a result of the takeover, Africell Uganda has over a million customers from the time it enters the market. The network is particularly popular in Uganda for its data services. An LTE network is available in and around Kampala . It is the only one of its kind operated by Africell. Its headquarters are in Kampala.
