The 1998 Africa Cup ( English : African Cup of Nations , French : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the 21st game of the African continental football championship and took place from February 7th to 28th in Burkina Faso .

As in previous years, there was also a qualification to reduce the field of participants from this time 36 applicants to the planned sixteen final round participants, whereby the host Burkina Faso and the defending champion South Africa were automatically qualified. Ultimately, the following teams qualified: Angola , Algeria , Egypt , Burkina Faso , Ivory Coast , Ghana , Guinea , Cameroon , DR Congo , Morocco , Mozambique , Namibia , Zambia , South Africa , Togo and Tunisia .

The game was played with four groups of four teams each. The two best teams in each group then played the tournament winner from the quarter-finals in the knockout system as usual . The games were held in the Stade du 4-Août and Stade Municipal in Ouagadougou and in the Stade Omnisports in Bobo-Dioulasso.

Host Burkina Faso achieved their greatest success so far at the Africa Cup with fourth place. Egypt, won the tournament, became African champions for the fourth time and qualified for the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup in Mexico.
