The Afro-Bolivian royal family ( Spanish Casa Real Afroboliviana ) is a ceremonial monarchy recognized in Bolivia . The Pinedo family royalty is viewed by the Bolivian government as the long-standing leaders of the Afro-Bolivian community. The members of the royal house are said to be descendants of the dynasty of an ancient African monarchy.

history

The founder of the royal family, Prince Uchicho, was allegedly the son of the king of a tribe in Senegal , according to other sources he came from the Congo . He was abducted as a slave in one of the last slave ships from Africa around 1820 and brought to the Hacienda of the Marquis de Pinedo in the area of Yungas in what is now the Department of La Paz and sold. He was recognized by other slaves as coming from a royal house because he had tattoos on his body that only members of royal families had. In 1823 Uchicho was crowned. In 1826, Bolivia formally abolished slavery .

He was followed in the royal house by Prince Boniface, who took the family name Pinedo of the owner of the plantation, as was the custom in the past.

King Boniface was followed by Don José (also: Joseph) and then Bonifacio Pinedo . After Bonifacio's death in 1954, the royal family was run by his eldest daughter, Doña Aurora. Julio Pinedo , Aurora's eldest son, received the title of king in 1992, and his status and royal house were officially recognized by the Bolivian state in 2007.

The Afrobolivian population group has only been one of the 36 recognized minorities in the country since the constitutional amendment in 2009. This minority of Afro-Bolivians comprises around 26,000 people (0.24% of the population of Bolivia).
