Agrégation

Agrégation (actually "joining the herd") isan entrance exam for the upper positions in secondary schools in the school system in France . The agrégation was originally set up with the aim of deploying the teachers selected in this way -called agrégés - at the Lycée level (the Lycée corresponds to the German upper secondary school level) as well as in the classes préparatoires located at Lycées. In practice, however, agrégés alsoteachin collège (6th to 9th grade in the German school system).

The Agrégation is not a final degree examination (like the License or the Maîtrise was before and like the new university final exams License and Master ). Rather, it is an annual concours , i. H. an entrance examination through which a limited number of civil servant secondary school teachers (collège and lycée) can be selected, depending on requirements in the individual school subjects.

Registration for the Agrégation required at least one maîtrise (i.e. four years of study) until 2010 , and since then a five-year master’s degree in the relevant subject. Most of those who register have already acquired the CAPES , that is, they are civil servants in the second highest category. The failure rate in the agrégation is high (80–90%) because the number of aspirants generally exceeds the number of vacant positions advertised. Many aspirants try it several times in a row, very often ultimately in vain.

The examination procedure consists of a written part with z. Some seven-hour written exams and an oral part to which only those who have passed the written part are admitted ( admissible ). The candidates are ranked according to their results. Numbers 1 to z. B. 38 are accepted ( admis ), all other candidates from position 39 not. Anyone who passes the written part of the Agrégation twice without passing the oral exam is considered bi-admissible . For those who already have the CAPES, this means that they will move up in the salary bracket.

The Agrégé (e) s represent the top category of high school teachers. Their professional field is usually the lycée , that is, the upper level, but many of them also teach in the very demanding Classes préparatoires ("preparatory classes") for the so-called Grandes écoles , in the lower study cycles of the universities or on the other hand in some cases also in the colleges .

Applicants who have obtained a degree in an EU member state or a country of the EEA that requires a university degree of at least 4 years can take part in the Agrégation examination procedure .

Successful completion of the selection process entitles you to admission to a one-year course at an Ecole Supérieure du Professorat et de l'Education (ESPE), until September 1, 2013 Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maîtres (IUFM) before starting teaching. The title Professeur agrégé is awarded.

However, the agrégation must first be validated through a certain teaching activity at schools or universities (also possibly accompanying the doctorate), otherwise it will expire.

The Agrégation can be completed for the following subjects: Philosophy, Classical and Modern Literature, History, Geography, Economics and Social Sciences, German, English, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Mathematics, Physics ( Option chemistry, physics and electrical engineering, physical-chemical processes), bio- and geosciences, biochemistry, mechanics, civil engineering, electrical engineering, economics and management, music education and choir, fine arts (option plastic arts, applied arts) and sport.

There is another form of agrégation . In subjects such as law and economics , after completing a doctoral thesis , you can pass another Agrégation , through which the Agrégé becomes a professor without having to write a habilitation beforehand .
