Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi (born June 5, 1958 in Mutsamudu on the Comoros island of Anjouan ) was President of the Comoros from May 2006 to 2011. He emerged victorious in the 2006 presidential election , replacing Azali Assoumani , who had been in office since 1999 . In 2009 he tried successfully through a constitutional referendum to achieve a radical reform of the Comoros political system towards a stronger central state . However, that was in the new constitutionThe Constitutional Court of the Comoros declared the proposed possibility of a further presidency invalid for him, so that he could no longer run for the presidential elections in 2010 . On August 21, 2018 Sambi was corruption and embezzlement accused
