The Aire at Apremont

The Aire is a river in France that runs in the Grand Est region . It rises in the municipality of Saint-Aubin-sur-Aire and flows in a north-westerly to north-north-westerly direction. It forms a long stretch of the long valley of the Argonne , east of the Forêt d'Argonne, the Argonner forest , which it finally leaves to the west by breaking through the ridge on the eastern edge of the Champagne . Five kilometers south-west of Grandpré , after around 125 km from the right, it joins the Aisne, which is only 120 km long .

After about 45 km of its course at Beauzée-sur-Aire, it flowed past its headwaters in less than 3 km to the east and north. Its flow path from there to its mouth is only about 80 km. The Aisne, which soon after its source reaches flatter terrain, can form more meanders there than the Aire in its mountain valley. Aire and lower Aisne together form a river course of about 360 km in length.

In the estuary below Termes , the Aire divides into a multitude of watercourses, a tributary flows about 800 meters further upstream in the municipality of Senuc .

On its way, the Aire crosses the Meuse and Ardennes departments .
