The al-Schaab Stadium ( Arabic ملعب الشعب, DMG malʿab aš-Šaʿb ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Iraqi capital Baghdad . The football clubs al-Zawraa SC , Iraqi record champions, and al-Shorta SC play their home games on the facility.

history

Construction began on April 21, 1960. The opening took place in 1966. The sports facility holds 40,000 spectators. Until the inauguration of the Basra Sports City Stadium in Basra in 2013, the al-Schaab Stadium was the largest stadium in the country.

The al-Schaab Stadium was a gift from a businessman to the Iraqi government and is the home of the Iraqi national football team . The opening game took place in 1966 between a Baghdad selection and Benfica Lisbon , for which Eusébio also played at the time . The game ended in a 2-1 win for the guests from Portugal. The golf cup was held there in 1979 .

The Iraqi national soccer team has not played in the stadium for more than two decades. The reason for this were various wars in the country, which ensured that the security in the stadium was no longer guaranteed. Since 2007 the stadium has been used again for international games. A record number of spectators in Iraqi football that still exists today was achieved in the 2007/08 season when 80,000 spectators saw the final of the Iraqi Super League between al-Zawraa and Arbil FC , which the club from the capital of Erbil of the Kurdistan Region won. In addition, the first international match in Baghdad since the Iraq war took place in front of 80,000 spectators . On July 13, 2009, Iraq defeated the Palestinian national team 4-0.
