Al Jazeera English is an English language news channel that began broadcasting on November 15, 2006. Like its Arabic-language sister station Al Jazeera , it is headquartered in Doha , Qatar , with subsidiary offices in London , Washington, DC and Kuala Lumpur .

Mainly news and articles about current affairs are sent 24 hours a day. The focus is specifically on events in countries in the global south , primarily from Arab states and the Middle East . The station sees itself as a supplement or alternative to international news stations that report predominantly from the global north. In recent years, Al Jazeera has been able to poach several moderators and journalists, some of whom are well-known, from other stations such as CNN , BBC and ABC and hire greats such as David Frost . The former press spokesman for the US armed forces in the 2003 Iraq war, Josh Rushing, has also been part of the team since 2005. In addition to English-speaking moderators, there are just as many international reporters on duty, who are also often based in the countries reported. Often, contributions and reports from the station are quoted by Western media and named as a source of information. Al Jazeera has been recognized by various sources in the protests in the Arab world since 2010 and was honored with a Peabody Award in 2012 for its coverage of the Arab Spring.
