Al Lucas

Albert B. "Al" Lucas (* 16th November 1916 in Windsor , Ontario ; † 19th July 1983 in New York City ) was a Canadian jazz - bassist of Swing .

Al Lucas' mother was a concert pianist; He received lessons from her as a child, and at the age of twelve he switched to the bass and tuba. At sixteen, Lucas moved to New York City , where he played with Kaiser Marshall , then with the Ace Harris Sunset Royal Orchestra from 1933 to 1942. He then worked with Hot Lips Page , Coleman Hawkins and Eddie Heywood in 1944/45 before becoming a member of the trio of Mary Lou Williams ( Zodiac Suite 1945) and then the Duke Ellington Orchestra (1945/46), with whom he also performed in 1956. He was also involved in numerous other recordings, for example with James P. Johnson , JJ Johnson , Ben Webster , Erroll Garner and Eddie South . From 1947 to 1953 he went on tours with Illinois Jacquet , 1954–56 he played again with Heywood. In 1957 he worked in Cootie Williams ' Savoy Ballroom Orchestra , in 1958 with 7th Ave. Stompers with Emmett Berry , Vic Dickenson , Joe Wilder and Buster Bailey . He also recorded with Ruby Braff , Charlie Byrd and Teddy Wilson , on whose trio album The Impeccable Mr. Wilson he was involved. Later, Lucas mainly worked as a studio musician and only performed occasionally in the jazz environment. In 1961 he worked on Leo Parker's album Rollin 'with Leo and in 1963 on Sonny Stitt's album Salt & Pepper .
