Alain Sutter (born January 22, 1968 in Bern ) is a former Swiss football player . Since January 3, 2018, he has been the head of sport at the super league club FC St. Gallen .

Career

Grasshoppers Club Zurich

At the age of 17, Sutter was part of the squad of the Swiss first division club Grasshoppers , where he was under contract from 1985 to 1993 . In the 1987/1988 season, however, he played on loan for Young Boys Bern . Sutter won four national titles with the Grasshoppers.

Change to the Bundesliga

For the 1993/94 season , Sutter moved to Germany for 1. FC Nürnberg . On August 6, 1993 (1st matchday) he made his debut in the Bundesliga when the "Club" lost to Hamburger SV with 2: 5 goals . Sutter scored his first goal on October 22, 1993 (13th matchday) in a 5-0 win at home against VfB Leipzig with the goal of the meanwhile 4-0.

With his five goals in 29 missions he could not prevent the team from relegating to the 2nd Bundesliga . He moved to FC Bayern Munich in 1994 and played there under Giovanni Trapattoni . After 22 league games and one goal (on October 15, 1994, the 9th matchday, in a 3-3 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt ) as well as a game in the UEFA Cup and seven appearances in the Champions League , he left Bayern after only one Season. For the Bundesliga club SC Freiburg he played 45 league games from October 21, 1995 (10th matchday) to April 12, 1997 (27th matchday); he scored five league goals and was also used three times in DFB Cup matches.

End of career in the USA

After four seasons for three clubs and 96 Bundesliga games with a total of 11 goals, he moved to Dallas Burn in the United States for two seasons at the end of his football career .

National team

For the senior national team of Switzerland he played 62 times and scored five goals. He made his debut on October 9, 1985 in Copenhagen in the Group 6 qualifier for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico in a 0-0 draw against Denmark . He took part in the 1994 World Cup in the USA , scored a goal in the group game on June 22nd - in a 4-1 win over Romania - and made it to the round of 16 , which was lost 3-0 to Spain . For the European Championship 1996 he was not considered by coach Artur Jorge .

Alain Sutter was a football expert and commentator for Swiss television from 1998 to 2017 .

From 2008 he worked as a consultant for the Swiss professional football club FC Winterthur . In May 2011 he took on a mandate as a consultant at the Grasshoppers. He took a seat on the transfer committee and was the first point of contact for the head coach.

Since January 3, 2018, Sutter has been head of sports at FC St. Gallen .

He offers his experience in the form of coaching, workshops and presentations on the subject of stress management . His first book, Stress-Free , was published in 2013 . His second book Affair of the Heart was published in October 2016 .

Alain Sutter lives with his family in Wettingen . He is the uncle of the Swiss soccer professional Nicola Sutter .
